Amma / Ammama, you will forever be remembered for all your love, all your kindness and all the commitment you gave your family.A part of you will always remain with us. Although we will miss you, we know that you are now at peace.

Today, 9th October, 2020, my grandmother passed away. She was 95 years old. If I had written this yesterday, I would have still been able to use the present tense to describe the woman she was. Why did I want to write about her? My grandmother was not perfect. She had her faults but don’t we all? She hated to admit that she was wrong. It was a cultural thing for her. Maybe it was personal, I would not know because I never asked her about it.

My grandmother loved fiercely but she also had to bear so much in her youth and adulthood, she learnt to be steel-laced. Her attitude was one of formidable perseverance. She was never one to wear her emotions on her sleeve. Love to her meant actions - not words. It meant teaching me to read, teaching me to eat neatly. When I lost my Amma, she lost her daughter. Having a daughter of my own, I know that that pain would have been unbearable. It broke her for a while, but she layered on the steel and returned to her life - for all of us.

Her house was my haven. With her was normalcy and routine. I learnt the importance of structure. I learnt to layer on steel from the best. Ammama - though I never said it, I love you, I will miss you. Today, God has one of his Steel Magnolias back in his bouquet.- Mirna
