obituary
AGNES Tan Kim Lwi passed away in Singapore on 4 September
2021. The youngest of five children of Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Toh Puan Yeo Yeok Neo, Agnes was called Su, the diminutive of Bongsu.
She is survived by 5 nieces and one nephew-Chan Poh Puay, Chan Leong Cheng, Chan Chin Choo, Tan Siok Eng, Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo, Tan Siok Lee.
Agnes and her sister Alice Tan Kim Yoke enjoyed two rare privileges pre-Merdeka: both were allowed to reject proposed marriages, which both did; and both studied overseas for 10-plus years before returning home.
Letters between father and daughters show their affection and depth of their relationship-Alice and Agnes discussed European events and criticised men having mistresses!
At Agnes' 1OOth birthday lunch on 17 February 2020, a cousin's son, John Lee, sang "A Bicycle Built for Two:' After a few minutes, Agnes sang this song in perfect tune.
This is how Agnes will be remembered-a lovely, lively lady who loved her family and loved singing.
